Although JANAC and other sources credit both Grayback and USS Shad (SS-235) for this sinking, Shad fired her torpedoes at 0018 on 27 October 1943, her only attack on this convoy. Alden credits Shad with damaging Kamo Maru in this attack. Fuji Maru was attempting to assist Kamo Maru, and was not hit until about 0620, by torpedoes fired by Grayback.
