*****

Other Barb sinking claims on this patrol that are unconfirmed or disproven:

安洋丸 - Anyo Maru - Although Barb attacked the convoy that Anyo Maru was in, and is given credit for sinking this ship in JANAC and other sources, research shows that Anyo Maru was not damaged in Barb's attack, and was sunk later the same day by USS Picuda (SS-382).

Meiho Maru - damaged; sunk more than two months later by aircraft (not credited to Barb in JANAC)

Hisagawa Maru - sunk by aircraft on January 9, 1945 (not credited to Barb in JANAC)

3 cargo ships, names unknown (not credited to Barb in JANAC)

Katuura (Katsuura) Maru, lost by accidental grounding, February 2, 1945 (not credited to Barb in JANAC)

Patrol 12

#11 札幌丸 Sapporo Maru No. 11

第112号海防艦 - Coast Defense Vessel No. 112

#15生保丸 - Seiho Maru No. 15 (Naval vessel not credited in JANAC, but is credited to Barb in Alden and Cressman)

Totals

ships, tons

The Joint Army-Navy Assessment Committee (JANAC) credited Barb with 17 ships and 96,628 tons sunk. Note that the criteria JANAC used included all Japanese Naval vessels (although JANAC did not usually count warships less than 500 tons that were converted from merchant ships) and all Japanese merchant vessels of 500 or more gross tons known or believed to have been lost during the war. Differences between JANAC figures and current research are noted above.

Alden-McDonald credit Barb with ships and tons sunk, plus ships damaged, tons. For the sinking of 王洋丸 - Gyokuyo Maru, Alden gives partial credit to Barb and Spadefish.

War Patrol Reports and Endorsements credit Barb with 25 ships and 179,700 tons sunk.

SORG credits Barb with 31 ships (over 500 tons), and 122,800 tons sunk.

RADM Fluckey in his book Thunder Below credits Barb (on Patrols 7 through 12) with 29 ships and 146,808 tons sunk.

An article on the website of the Naval History and Heritage Command credits Barb with "destroying 96,628 tons of enemy sinking."
