Wahoo Ceremony-at-Sea

The U.S. Navy, while conducting routine operations off the coast of Wakkanai, Japan, held a Ceremony-at-Sea for USS Wahoo on July 8, 2007.  Rear Adm. Douglas McAneny, Commander, Submarine Group 7, CTF 74, and CTF54, conducted the ceremony aboard USS Frank Cable (AS-40), a submarine tender homeported in Guam.

Accompanying Frank Cable was a Russian LST, on a similar memorial mission for the former Soviet submarine L-19, which was also lost in the La Perouse Strait.

Photos and video of this ceremony are planned to be a part of the main Wahoo Memorial Ceremony at USS Bowfin Submarine Museum & Park, Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, on Thursday, October 11, 2007.

Remembrance Project

Wahoo Letters - CAPT LogueThe United States Navy and USS Bowfin Submarine Museum & Park provided family members with the opportunity to make remembrances of loved ones lost on USS Wahoo.  As part of the Navy’s ceremony in the La Perouse Strait, the Navy placed a large, coin-shaped container of remembrances in the water at the final resting place of USS Wahoo (SS-238).

We had collected and forwarded all materials received by June 18, 2007 to the U.S. Seventh Fleet for the at-sea ceremony.

The photo on the right shows CAPT Tom Logue, nephew of Wahoo crew member Robert Logue, with the packet of remembrances.

Below is a photo of RDML John Christenson, also a nephew of Robert Logue, with the Wahoo Remembrance container.

Sailors from the Frank Cable placed the remembrances into the Wahoo Ceremonial Coin.

The Coin was later ceremoniously dropped into the water at the site of Wahoo's final resting place in the La Perouse Strait. (The three photos above courtesy of CAPT Thomas A. Logue.)
