Russell was born in Milford Junction, Indiana.

In his busy Naval career, he applied for pilot training, but washed out; he applied for Warrant Officer (Gunner), but did not then have enough time in service and was rejected; he impersonated a Pharmacist's Mate, but was not prosecuted; all the while he was highly praised by his Commanding Officers.
