SubVet Stan Nicholls tolling the bell

This page is set up to give submarine veterans' organizations accurate and consistent information to use in their memorial events, known as "The Tolling of the Boats."

See also our Submarine Losses - Chronological page.

If the number of men lost shown here disagrees with the number you have seen elsewhere, please see our Discrepancies in Numbers of Lost Submariners page.

The "Number of Men Lost" column includes men from the boat who died as Prisoners of War, and also includes any passengers (civilians, foreign nationals, Army personnel) carried on the vessel at the time of her loss.

A more detailed explanation of each World War II submarine loss, including the most likely cause and an approximate location of the loss (when known), can be found on our Submarines Lost in World War II pages. Additionally, each personal memorial page on this site lists the most likely cause and an approximate location of the loss.
