Patrol 2

23 Oct 1944-12 Dec 1944

王洋丸 Gyokuyo Maru - JANAC credits Spadefish (only) with this sinking, Alden gives shared credit to USS Barb (SS-220) and Spadefish.

神鷹 Shinyo - Sinking credited to Spadefish in Alden, Cressman, and JANAC, althought JANAC mistakenly identified this ship as 隼鷹 (Junyo). Junyo was heavily damaged in a separate submarine attack by USS Plaice (SS-390) and possibly USS Redfish (SS-395) on 9 Dec 1944, but survived the war.

逢坂山丸 Osakasan Maru - JANAC, Cressman, combinedfleet, and Japanese sources credit USS Peto (SS-265) (only) with this sinking. (JANAC misnames the vessel as "Aisakasan Maru".) Alden gives Spadefish partial credit for this sinking, although it is unclear that any of her torpedoes struck this ship.

Submarine Chaser No. 156 - Credited to Spadefish in JANAC, but was not in this action. While in port in Takao, she was sunk by aircraft on 29 March 1945.

Totals

Current research credits Spadefish with sinking 24 ships, totaling 90,568 tons, including Gyokuyo Maru (Credited to Spadefish in JANAC, but sharing credit with USS Barb in Alden), Hinode Maru #17, a minesweeper of 235 tons that was not credited to Spadefish in JANAC, as well as three small vessels, Hokushin Maru #37, Tenjin Maru #3, and Daido Maru, also not credited to Spadefish in JANAC. These figures do not include Submarine Chaser No. 156 (credited to Spadefish in JANAC but actually sunk later by aircraft), Osakasan Maru (probably sunk by USS Peto), and the Soviet ship Transbalt (sunk in error).

JANAC credits Spadefish with 21 ships sunk totalling 88,091 tons. Note that the criteria JANAC used included all Japanese Naval vessels (although JANAC did not usually count warships less than 500 tons that were converted from merchant ships) and all Japanese merchant vessels of 500 or more gross tons known or believed to have been lost during the war. Differences between JANAC figures and current research are noted above. Using JANAC's criteria, Spadefish should be credited with the sinking of Hinode Maru No. 17, but research shows that she should not be credited with the sinking of Submarine Chaser No. 156.

Alden-McDonald credit Spadefish with 24 ships (including three small vessels (Hokushin Maru #37, Tenjin Maru #3, and Daido Maru) and 87,295 tons sunk. They also include Gyokuyo Maru, sharing credit with USS Barb, as well as partial credit for Osakasan Maru. These figures do not include Submarine Chaser No. 156 (sunk later by aircraft) and the Soviet ship Transbalt (sunk in error).

Moore in Spadefish credits the boat with 31 ships (minus Transbalt) totalling 95,646 tons. These figures include: Osakasan Maru (6,600 tons), Sub Chaser 156 (100 tons), a schooner (name unknown) (100 tons), a motor sampan (name unknown) (50 tons), a trawler (name unknown) (200 tons), another trawler (name unknown) (100 tons), along with Hokushin Maru #37, Tenjin Maru #3, and Daido Maru.

SORG credits Spadefish with 27 ships and 122,700 tons sunk.
