Note that two small patrol craft, Kyo Maru #8 and Kyo Maru #10, both 340 tons, were sunk either by Tang or by aircraft on or about February 23, 1944. Not credited to Tang in JANAC; patrol report does not claim hits on these escorts; Alden says more likely sunk by aircraft). |

				  | Totals |
26 ships, 88,852 tons, not including Kyo Maru #8 and Kyo Maru #10, which were probably sunk by aircraft, and not including Kori Go, which is credited to Tang in Cressman, but not in JANAC and Alden, and whose sinking by Tang is disputable. These figures do include one small Military vessel (Nansatsu Maru No. 2) not credited to Tang in JANAC, and one vessel (Nanko Maru No. 8) credited to Tang in Alden and Japanese sources, but not in JANAC.
JANAC credits Tang with 24 ships and 94,824 tons sunk. Note that the criteria JANAC used included all Japanese Naval vessels (although JANAC did not usually count warships less than 500 tons that were converted from merchant ships) and all Japanese merchant vessels of 500 or more gross tons known or believed to have been lost during the war. Differences between JANAC figures and current research are noted above. Note that much of the difference in tonnage totals between our figures and JANAC's is due to the correction of Tsukushi Maru's tonnage - JANAC lists 8,135 tons, and the correct figure is 1,858 tons.
Alden-McDonald credit Tang with 26 ships and 88,677 tons sunk.
War Patrol Reports and Endorsements credit Tang with 27 ships and 227,493 tons sunk.
SORG credits Tang with 31 ships and 227,800 tons sunk, plus one ship damaged, 4,100 tons.
The Miramar Ship Index credits Tang with 25 ships and 88,254 tons sunk. |

					| Explanatory Note |
On individual ship pages, "Attack No." refers to the number assigned to the submarine attack by authors John D. Alden and Craig R. McDonald as shown in their work, United States and Allied Submarine Successes in the Pacific and Far East During World War II - Fourth Edition, McFarland & Company, Inc., Jefferson, North Carolina, and London, 2009.
The number is a unique identifier from the source of data that is the basis of this presentation. |
